A team of researchers from the University of Bristol used a supercomputer to predict when Earth will become uninhabitable for humans. Their study found that in 250 million years, extreme climates will increase dramatically due to the continents merging into a new supercontinent called Pangea Ultima. This future world would be extremely hot and dry, with increased volcanic eruptions, carbon dioxide levels, and global warming.
The researchers predict that unprecedented heat will cause mass extinction, wiping out humans and mammals. Temperatures between 40-50 degrees Celsius and high humidity would make it impossible for humans to cool themselves through sweat. Dr. Alexander Farnsworth warned that this new supercontinent would create a triple whammy of climate effects, making the environment hostile to life.
Dr. Eunice Lo emphasized that while the predicted uninhabitable planet is in 250 million years, current extreme heat impacts human health. This highlights the urgency of achieving net-zero emissions as soon as possible to avoid such a fate. The study’s findings underscore the importance of taking immediate action against climate change.
