Scientists studying crustaceans in Vietnam have discovered a new species of deep-sea sea bug, dubbed the “supergiant” Bathynomus vaderi. The massive creature, which resembles Darth Vader from the Star Wars franchise, has been found in the South China Sea, where it’s fished by locals for human consumption.
Measuring around 30 centimeters long, the species is significantly larger than typical sea bugs of its kind, with a hard exoskeleton and seven pairs of legs. Researchers used this unique combination of characteristics to identify the new species, which has only been spotted twice before in the region.
The Bathynomus vaderi lives in depths where no light reaches, estimated to be over 3,000 feet underwater. Further research is needed to determine if the species is limited to the Spratly Islands in Vietnam or extends further into the South China Sea.
This discovery highlights the ongoing search for new species of deep-sea creatures, many of which remain unknown to science due to their remote habitats and unique environments.
