Superman Smashes Box Office Records with $115M Debut

James Gunn’s Superman has set a new record for the domestic box office, topping Friday’s chart with $56.5 million and potentially reaching a whopping $116.6 million, surpassing Zack Snyder’s 2013 film Man of Steel. The movie’s success marks a major comeback for DC Studios, which was rebooted by Gunn as co-head.

The film has grossed $96.5 million globally from 78 markets, with an early global total of $100 million-plus. Superman is the first superhero film to cross this milestone since Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine in summer 2024, and it’s also the first DC title to reach this mark in eight years since Wonder Woman debuted in 2017.

Gunn’s success follows his previous work on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, which boasts a domestic opening of $146.5 million. While Superman won’t beat that record, it could rank as Gunn’s second-best, not adjusted for inflation.

The film has been generating hype, even with President Donald Trump joining in on social media to promote the movie. The audience is predominantly male and young, with 68% of ticket buyers under the age of 34. However, fans are likely to support the film through strong word-of-mouth, which could help it maintain a long run.

The cast includes David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, among others. Gunn’s success marks a milestone for DC Studios, with other upcoming projects including an HBO series on Green Lantern and a Supergirl movie in 2026.
