James Gunn expressed his gratitude for the initial box office success of Superman, stating he’s “incredibly grateful” for the enthusiasm and kind words from audiences. The superhero blockbuster has seen an estimated global debut of $217 million.
Gunn took to Threads on Sunday to share his appreciation, saying he’s happy to have made a movie that focuses on the “man” part of Superman’s equation – a kind person looking out for those in need. He believes this resonates with people worldwide, making it a hopeful testament to human kindness.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also celebrated the film’s debut, saying it marked an exciting start to DC Studios’ reboot. The studio has plans for several upcoming projects, including Supergirl and Clayface in theaters, as well as Lanterns on HBO Max.
Gunn previously downplayed concerns about the pressure to deliver at the box office, stating that $700 million is “complete and utter nonsense” and the film doesn’t need to be as big of a success as people make it out to be. Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
