Superman Soars to Box Office Victory

“Superman” continues its dominance at the box office, earning $16.6 million on its second Friday and boosting its domestic total to $194.4 million. The film’s 50% drop from last week is a more modest decline than expected, considering comic book adaptations often suffer significant drops.

The DC Studios universe-rebooter has pushed ahead of fellow superhero feature “Thunderbolts,” which ranks as the eighth-highest grossing North American release of the year. With a production cost of $225 million, “Superman” needs to maintain week-to-week holds to stay profitable.

New releases “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Smurfs” are in close competition for third place. The horror entry earned $5.8 million on its opening day, while the animated adventure took in $4 million on its first day. Both films are facing challenging prospects, with “I Know What You Did Last Summer” projected to earn around $13 million and “Smurfs” aiming for a $12 million debut.

Meanwhile, Paramount’s animated adventure “Smurfs” is facing an uphill battle due to its high production budget of $58 million. The film’s poor reviews and bad Cinema Score grades are unlikely to boost its staying power.

In other news, A24’s horror film “Eddington” earned $1.8 million on its opening day, while Universal’s “Jurassic World Rebirth” took in $6.5 million on Friday. Warner Bros.’ release of “F1” rounds out the top five with a slim 24% drop from its daily total a week ago.

As DC Studios and Warner Bros. look to establish their comic book continuity, upcoming releases such as “Supergirl,” “Clayface,” and a “Wonder Woman” reboot are expected to arrive in 2026.
