The DC/Warner Bros’ latest Superman installment, directed by James Gunn, has kicked off with a flying start, raking in $40.3 million at the box office through Wednesday and Thursday in North America and 57 overseas markets.
Thursday’s domestic preview of $22.5M set a record for the Man of Steel franchise, while international markets added $17.8M to the total. The global total does not include Friday’s estimated earnings from North America.
Gunn’s Superman debuted in nine offshore markets on Wednesday and another 48 markets joined Thursday. Today’s additional 21 markets bring the total number of international territories in release to 78.
In terms of market openings, France topped the list with $1.3M, including previews, followed closely by Korea ($700K), Italy ($519K), Indonesia ($462K), and the Philippines ($386K).
Mexico and Australia also made strong debuts, ranking second and third, respectively. Brazil’s Superman launch broke records, becoming the biggest opening day for James Gunn’s film.
The global total is expected to be around $200M-$250M, a respectable number considering streaming’s impact on box office numbers. Despite initial skepticism, the film has proven its potential as a DC world leader.
