Superyacht with British Tech Magnate Mike Lynch Aboard Recovered After Sinking Off Sicily

A British-flagged luxury superyacht that sank off Sicily last year, killing U.K. tech magnate Mike Lynch and six others, has been recovered by salvage crews. The 184-foot vessel, the Bayesian, resurfaced on Saturday after a complex operation to bring it ashore for further investigation.

Lynch’s daughter and five others died in the sinking on August 19 during a violent storm as he was celebrating his acquittal from fraud charges two months earlier. Fifteen people survived, including the captain and all crew members except the chef.

The recovery team used eight steel lifting straps to support the hull upright and form part of a steel wire lifting system that raised the vessel out of the water over the past three days. Specialized cave divers were involved in searching the wreckage during the initial operation.

The Bayesian is missing its mast, which was cut off before being brought to a nearly upright position to allow the craft to be raised. Salvage crews are now conducting technical tests on the hull and plan to transport it to the Sicilian port of Termini Imerese for further investigation by Italian authorities.
