Supreme Court Releases Opinions in Three Cases

The US Supreme Court released its opinions in three cases on Thursday. The court held that the federal government cannot prosecute a man for violating a law that prohibits possessing a gun while being an unlawful user of controlled substances, due to the Second Amendment rights protected by Justice Neil Gorsuch’s majority opinion. In Hunter v. United States, the court ruled that an agreement not to appeal a sentence is unenforceable if it would result in a miscarriage of justice.

The court also clarified the scope of the Rooker-Feldman doctrine, which limits federal district courts’ authority to review state-court judgments. The majority opinion held that this doctrine applies to judgments subject to further review in state appellate proceedings, not just final decisions.

Additionally, the court is expected to rule on a case involving a Fed governor’s firing by President Donald Trump and a challenge to laws banning drug users from possessing guns. The justices will also be live blogging opinions released next Tuesday and Thursday.
