Supreme Court Revises Stray Dog Order, Calls for Compassionate Approach

The Supreme Court has revised its earlier order on stray dogs in the Delhi-NCR area, saying it was “too harsh”. The court had previously ordered that all stray dogs must be rounded up and shifted to special shelters, but now says a holistic approach is needed.

The three-judge bench modified the August 11 order, ruling that stray dogs can be released from shelters after sterilisation, except in cases of aggressive behaviour or rabies. People are warned not to feed strays in public, and dedicated feeding spaces will be set up in each ward.

Animal activists have welcomed the revised order, which they say considers the welfare of the dogs and the safety of people. The court has also established a helpline for residents to report violations and urged municipal officials to collect, neuter, and release dogs without obstruction.

The revised order is based on Animal Birth Control (ABC) rules, which provide guidelines for controlling stray dog populations. The court warned against obstructing these services.
