The Supreme Court has dismissed petitions claiming 43 Rohingya refugees, including women and children, were dropped in the Andaman sea for deportation to Myanmar. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh questioned the authenticity of materials provided by petitioners and refused to stay further deportation.
The court criticized the petitioners’ claims as “fanciful ideas” during a difficult time for the country. It also expressed skepticism over phone call recordings allegedly showing Rohingya deportations from Myanmar. The bench urged petitioners to provide substantiating material to support their allegations.
Petitioner Colin Gonsalves referred to a report by the United Nations Human Rights Office, but the court said people outside cannot dictate authorities and sovereignty. The court ordered Gonsalves to serve a copy of the petition to the Attorney General’s office.
The top court stated that the petition’s averments are “beautifully crafted stories using flowery language” without supporting material. It will comment on the UN report while sitting in a three-judge bench.
