A recent study published in Nature analyzed over 100 mammals, including humans, and found a surprising connection between sterilization and longer lives. When males and females undergo sterilization – whether through contraception or surgery – they tend to live longer than those who don’t.
The study’s lead author notes that this may be due to reduced energetic costs associated with pregnancy and caring for offspring in females, as well as the removal of sex hormones in males which impacts biological aging. Vasectomies, a form of sterilization for men, do not seem to have the same impact on lifespan as castration.
The findings suggest that there is a trade-off between reproduction and living longer, with removal of reproductive organs leading to increased life expectancy in some cases. However, it’s unlikely that people like Bryan Johnson will take up this “life hack” due to societal stigma around sterilization.
