Surprisingly, Some Ultra-Processed Breakfast Cereals May Be Fine for Health

A recent statement by nutritional scientist Dr Federica Amati has highlighted that not all ultra-processed (UPF) breakfast cereals are unhealthy. Contrary to popular belief, some well-known brands like Weetabix, Bran Flakes, and Shredded wheat are considered relatively healthy due to their high fibre content.

The British Heart Foundation defines UPFs as mass-produced or packaged foods with added ingredients such as emulsifiers, sweeteners, and artificial colours and flavours. However, Dr Amati emphasizes that while most cereals are ultra-processed, they can still offer valuable nutritional benefits. In fact, cutting out these cereals altogether could potentially harm health.

Dr Amati has identified four UPF breakfast cereals that are worth consuming: Weetabix, Dorset Cereals Simply Muesli, Asda Bran Flakes, and Shredded wheat. These cereals may contain added ingredients like malted barley extract or industrial processing, but they still provide significant amounts of fibre, vitamins, and protein.

For example, Weetabix contains 9.9g of fibre per 100g serving, making it a convenient way to meet the daily fibre target. Shredded wheat is another option, with high fibre and protein content and no added harmful ingredients. Dr Amati advises serving these cereals with milk or yoghurt and a handful of fruit for a balanced breakfast.

In summary, not all ultra-processed breakfast cereals are created equal, and some may even offer health benefits when consumed as part of a balanced diet.
