Suspected Assassin of Russian General Igor Kirillov Arrested in Moscow

Russia has arrested a 29-year-old Uzbek man who confessed to planting and detonating the bomb that killed top Russian general Igor Kirillov. The suspect, born in 1995, claimed he carried out the assassination on orders from Ukraine’s intelligence services.

Kirillov, chief of Russia’s nuclear, biological and chemical protection troops, was killed outside his apartment building on Tuesday after a bomb hidden in an electric scooter exploded. Moscow denies Ukraine’s accusation that Kirillov was responsible for using chemical weapons against Ukrainian troops.

The suspect told investigators he had set up surveillance cameras, including one watched by people in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro who organised the killing. He also claimed to have received £78,000 and residency in a European country from Ukraine’s intelligence services.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted his country’s military is not capable of recovering occupied territories without diplomatic pressure from Kyiv’s allies. The US and other Western nations are providing significant support to Ukraine.

Russia has also accused Ukraine of using prohibited chemical substances on the battlefield, but these claims have been denied by Kyiv. Ukraine has unveiled a laser weapon that can down drones at distances over 2km, in an effort to combat Russian aerial attacks.
