Swapping Videos May Make You More Bored, Research Suggests

Watching online videos can be a great way to pass the time and escape boredom. However, new research suggests that constantly switching between short video snippets or fast-forwarding through them may actually make you more bored and less satisfied with the content.

The study, published by the American Psychological Association, found that participants who watched a single video without interruptions reported greater satisfaction and meaningful engagement than those who switched between videos or fast-forwarded through them. The researchers concluded that minimizing digital switching and focusing on fully engaging with the content can enhance enjoyment.

Lead author Katy Tam said, “Just like paying for a more immersive experience in a movie theater, more enjoyment comes from immersing oneself in online videos rather than swiping through them.” This finding is particularly relevant given that many people use digital media as a way to cope with boredom and anxiety.

The study’s findings also suggest that constant switching between videos may contribute to negative mental health outcomes, such as increased boredom and anxiety. Chronic boredom has been linked to depressive symptoms, anxiety, sadistic aggression, and risk-taking behaviors.

Overall, the research highlights the importance of mindful media consumption and suggests that people should aim to engage fully with online content rather than constantly switching between different videos or fast-forwarding through them.
