A gunman killed 11 people, including himself, and injured at least six others in a mass shooting at an adult education centre in Orebo, Sweden. The suspect, Rickard Andersson, was identified as a former student of the school but had not attended classes since 2021.
Police are still investigating the motive behind the attack, which has sent shockwaves through the nation. Authorities say Andersson had no apparent links to gangs and did not appear to be motivated by ideology or terrorism.
Andersson obtained his weapon legally, reportedly a hunting gun, but police do not know how he died yet. The investigation is ongoing, using fingerprints, dental records, DNA, and interviews with family members to identify victims.
The Risbergska centre provided adult education for people aged over 20 who did not finish primary or secondary school. King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia visited the site on Wednesday, saying “All of Sweden feels it has experienced this traumatic event” and describing it as a dark day in Swedish history.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also visited the site, calling for help for the injured and their relatives to bear the grief. The attack has left many Swedes mourning, with flags lowered across the country.
