A mass shooting in Sweden has left 10 people dead, sparking calls for tighter gun laws. The government has backed changes to restrict access to certain semi-automatic weapons and clarify suitability testing rules. Police have not ruled out a racist motivation behind the killing, which was carried out by a 35-year-old gunman identified as Rickard Andersson.
Andersson, a recluse with little contact with the outside world, is suspected of shooting at several municipal employees in Örebro before targeting students at Risbergska School. The victim list includes Syrian refugee Salim Iskef, who fled the war in 2015.
The government has agreed to limit access to certain semi-automatic weapons and clarify rules for suitability testing. Authorities also plan to tighten reporting requirements for those medically unsuitable for firearms.
Police described an “inferno” scene upon arrival, with over 130 officers responding to the school after alarms were triggered. The perpetrator is expected to be identified today. Witnesses reported a chaotic scene with panic attacks, screams, and bloodstains everywhere.
Sweden’s government has extended condolences to the king and families of the victims following the tragic incident.
