At least 10 people, including the gunman, were killed Tuesday at an adult education center in Orebro, Sweden, in what is being described as the country’s worst mass shooting. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called it “the worst mass shooting in Swedish history.” The victims attended courses for students over 20 years old and included immigrants learning Swedish.
Gun violence on school premises is rare in Sweden but has occurred with other weapons like knives or axes in recent years. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer said the attack was a devastating blow to society, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the “horrifying” act of violence.
The shooting occurred after many students left following a national exam and police found no prior warnings signs. Authorities have not yet established the motive behind the shooting and believe the perpetrator acted alone. The suspected gunman was among those killed, according to police.
