A mass shooting at an adult education center west of Stockholm, Sweden, has left at least 10 people dead and five seriously wounded. The shooter was killed, but the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes with shots ringing out and people scrambling for cover. They hid behind furniture and under tables to escape the gunman and the violence. One survivor, Hellen Werme, feared she might not see her children again. Another student, Mirna Essa, who studies Swedish at the school, said it was like a “movie” – all you can think of is “Why?”
The shooting occurred on Tuesday at the Campus Risbergska adult training school in Orebro, 125 miles west of Stockholm. The victims were part of an educational class when the gunman opened fire.
Police arrived after two hours and barricaded themselves outside the classroom. Inside, witnesses described a scene of blood and chaos. Five people were seriously wounded, including a student who received first aid from a fellow classmate.
The attack is the worst mass shooting in Swedish history, and it has left the Scandinavian nation reeling. Gun violence at schools is rare in Sweden, making this incident all the more shocking.
