Swedish Man Charged Over 2014 IS Pilot Murder

A Swedish man has been indicted for his suspected role in the 2014 capture and execution of a Jordanian pilot by the Islamic State (IS) militant group in Syria. Osama K., 32, from Malmo is accused of helping force the pilot into a metal cage before one of the group’s most infamous murders.

Prosecutors claim K. helped execute the prisoner while fighting for IS. The pilot was captured in December 2014 after his jet was downed near Raqqa. Images of the death were disseminated online by the group.

K. joined ISIS in Syria in 2014 and later returned to Europe, with previous convictions for complicity in the Paris and Brussels attacks. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Belgium but will be handed over to Sweden for a nine-month investigation and trial. Proceedings are scheduled to begin on June 4 at Stockholm District Court.
