Swedish School Shooting Leaves 10 Victims Dead, Gun Laws to Change

At least seven women and three men aged between 28 and 68 were killed in a mass shooting at an adult education centre in Orebro, Sweden, on Tuesday.

The suspected gunman, identified as 35-year-old Rickard Andersson, was found dead inside the school. Police confirmed that Andersson owned four rifles, three of which were found at the scene along with 10 empty magazines.

Sweden’s coalition government announced plans to strengthen gun laws, making it harder for people to purchase guns and restricting semi-automatic weapons like the AR-15. The country has a relatively high level of gun ownership, but most weapons are used for hunting.

The victims included Salim Isker, a 29-year-old man from Syria who fled conflict in 2015 with his mother and sister; Kareen Elia, Isker’s fiancée; Bassam Al Sheleh, a baker and father of two; and another unnamed victim.

Immigrant communities in Orebro are feeling vulnerable after the attack, and the government has acknowledged that the event caused fear among these communities. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown.
