Swimming World Championships Day 6 Highlights

The gold medals were spread around during the swimming world championships on Friday, thanks to the absence of top stars Léon Marchand and Summer McIntosh from their respective finals.

Léon Marchand will attempt to break his own record in the 400 individual medley on Sunday, while Summer McIntosh seeks two more gold medals over the weekend. The women’s 800-meter freestyle is expected to be a closely contested event with favorites Katie Ledecky and Summer McIntosh.

The Netherlands, China, Hungary, and the US picked up individual golds on Friday. Marrit Steenbergen of the Netherlands won the women’s 100-meter freestyle in a time of 52.55 seconds. Britain made its first appearance at the championships with a gold medal in the men’s 4×200 relay.

Through six days, the US and Australia are tied for the top spot in the gold-medal table with five each. The Americans have won 20 medals overall, while Australia has secured 13. Despite their success, the team is hampered by an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis among its members.
