Swiss Flight Attendant Dies After Emergency Landing Due to Smoke

A Swiss flight attendant died a week after an emergency landing in Austria due to smoke in the cabin of an Airbus A220-300 aircraft. The incident occurred on December 23 when a flight from Bucharest to Zurich was diverted to Graz after engine problems and smoke filled the cockpit and cabin.

The attendant, one of two crew members hospitalized, passed away Monday at a hospital in Graz. All 74 passengers were safely evacuated after the plane landed. Swiss International Air Lines has said that it is not releasing detailed information about the employee or the cause of death out of respect for their loved ones.

Twelve passengers received medical attention following the incident, but all have since been released from the hospital. An investigation by Austria’s public prosecutor’s office and an internal examination by Swiss are underway to determine the causes of the smoke and the effects on passengers and crew.

The airline has stated that initial findings point to a technical problem in one of the engines, but is working closely with authorities, the engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney, and Airbus. Swiss Chief Executive Officer Jens Fehlinger described his colleague’s death as a “saddest day” for the airline, stating that they will work together with relevant authorities to determine the causes involved.
