Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 Direct event is just around the corner, and a recent discovery has shed light on potential enhancements for original Switch games on the new console. The code of Monolith Soft’s sci-fi RPG Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition revealed an unfinished “60FPS Mode”, suggesting that the game may be among the first to receive a “Switch 2 Enhanced” treatment.
The modder, MasaGratoR, found that the game uses dynamic resolution on Switch, which allows it to scale up and down based on scene demands. On the original Switch, Xenoblade Chronicles X runs at 30FPS, but with the new hardware, the game could potentially reach 60FPS and higher resolutions.
This development hints at Nintendo’s plan for AI upscaling on the Switch 2, which may breathe new life into original games released on the console. The idea is similar to Sony’s approach when transitioning between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, offering graphical and performance upgrades for select titles. Although it’s unclear if these upgrades will be free, this feature could enhance the gaming experience for those who upgrade to the Switch 2.
The news comes ahead of the Switch 2 Direct event, which promises to reveal more about Nintendo’s plans for the new console. With original games potentially getting enhanced visuals and performance, fans are eagerly awaiting the announcement and its implications for the Switch ecosystem.
