Nintendo has been left “surprised” by the high demand for its upcoming Switch 2 console, with a staggering 2.2 million people entering a pre-order lottery in Japan alone. The company had anticipated an eight-year wait but is now scrambling to meet the expected demand.
The winners of the first drawing will be announced on April 24, while those not chosen will enter a second chance. However, this may still not be enough to fulfill all entrants’ orders. To address the shortage, Nintendo plans to strengthen its production system and ship more units in the future.
This news comes after Nintendo faced pre-order delays due to US tariffs and uncertainty over pricing. Pre-orders for the Switch 2 will begin on April 24 in Japan, the US, and Canada, with a price tag of $450. However, this may result in a loss for the company.
The high demand for consoles like the Switch 2 often leads to exploitation by resellers, as seen with the PS5 and Xbox Series X. These consoles were listed on eBay and Amazon for thousands of dollars, even more than their original sticker price. The SNES Mini and NES Mini also sold for over double their price on the same platform.
