I used to rely on Microsoft OneNote for note-taking, but after trusting my data to the cloud, I decided to switch to a self-hosted app that prioritizes privacy. My requirements included a tag system, ability to subdivide notes, and support for images or drawing.
After researching various options, I found Joplin, which surprisingly excels in writing with its full Markdown support and inline attachments. The app has plugins available if you need additional features, but I opted for simplicity. Joplin offers two synchronization options: cloud-sync using services like Dropbox or OneDrive, or self-hosting the server.
I’m impressed with how lightweight Joplin Server is, making it easy to set up on a Proxmox server or even an old Windows 10 PC. The MINISFORUM UN1250 mini-PC can also run Joplin, offering a compact and energy-efficient solution for basic tasks like document drafting and photo editing.
Note: I simplified the text by removing unnecessary words, phrases, and sentences while maintaining the original content’s essence.
