Sydney Sweeney is set to play real-life boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic, requiring her to gain 30 pounds and undergo intense physical training. To prepare, Sweeney trained for three and a half months, including weightlifting, kickboxing, and boxing sessions.
Sweeney shared her experience with director David Michôd in a recent profile for W Magazine, saying she “loved” every bit of the grueling process, which transformed her body. She gained significant weight, moving from size 23 jeans to size 27, and experienced a strong increase in muscle mass and strength.
The biopic, which has been described as a “female Rocky,” will also star Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, and Chad L. Coleman. The film is based on Christy Martin’s true story, including her accomplishments as a boxing champion in the 1990s and her survival of a horrific murder attempt by her husband in 2010.
A release date for the biopic has not been announced yet.
