Syracuse QB Steerage: Angeli Wins Out Over Collins

Syracuse football head coach Fran Brown has named Notre Dame transfer Steve Angeli as the team’s starting quarterback for their upcoming game against Tennessee on August 30th. The decision comes after a fierce competition between Angeli and LSU transfer Rickie Collins Jr.

Angeli, who played in 21 games for Notre Dame, was deemed the safer choice due to his experience and ability to lead the team. He has thrown for 772 yards and 10 touchdowns in his college career and led the Orange to a blowout win over Oregon State in the Sun Bowl following the 2023 season.

Collins, on the other hand, boasts a stronger arm and greater mobility, but struggled with command of the offense during training camp. Brown emphasized the importance of leadership, command, and cultural fit, ultimately choosing Angeli for the starting role.

The decision marks a significant shift from last season’s standout quarterback Kyle McCord, who led the country in passing yards and set multiple records. However, the Orange’s tough schedule and razor-thin margin for error will likely keep Collins involved on game day, possibly even in garbage time duty.

As the team faces four road games against ranked opponents and one home game against a bowl-game participant, Angeli will be under pressure to prove himself as a reliable leader. With experience dwindling as a reason for continued quarterback play, it remains to be seen how long Angeli can maintain his starting role.
