Syria is slowly rebuilding after nearly a decade of brutal rule under President Bashar al-Assad. The country’s people are celebrating their hard-won freedom, but many still grapple with the trauma of the past.
In an exclusive video report, The Guardian’s Bethan McKernan and Ayman Abu Ramouz speak to those on both sides of the divide. From Sednaya prison, a notorious site of human rights abuses, they meet a former prisoner who was recently liberated by his family just days ago.
As Syria looks to the future, many questions remain unanswered. What will happen to the thousands of people imprisoned under Assad’s regime? How will the country address its deep-seated economic and social issues?
Despite the challenges ahead, Syrians are cautiously optimistic about their new beginning. “We’re finally free,” says one resident. “But we also know that our journey is far from over.”
