Syria Rebel Leader Sets 4-Year Timeline for Elections

Syria rebel leader Ahmad al-Sharaa has set a four-year timeline for the country’s first elections under a new governing authority. In an interview with Saudi television network Al Arabiya, al-Sharaa stated that rewriting the constitution and reconstructing the country’s infrastructure are necessary steps before holding elections.

Al-Sharaa, who heads Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), believes the current chance for democratic progress is rare and wants to establish a lasting constitution. He announced that HTS will dissolve after a political dialogue in March, where factions will come together to determine Syria’s future.

The proposed timeline would see the establishment of a transitional government aimed at uniting the country. The Associated Press contributed to this report, with copyright reserved by Nexstar Media Inc.
