Syria Violence Worsens Amid Assad Loyalists and New Rulers’ Clashes

Dozens have been killed in violent clashes between forces loyal to Syria’s new rulers and fighters who remained loyal to deposed President Bashar al-Assad in a coastal region. The violence, which has left tens injured, is the worst since rebels toppled Assad in December.

A war monitoring group reported more than 70 people killed, including government forces and former regime soldiers. Gunmen have ambushed military checkpoints and launched attacks on military zones, while others holed up in rural areas.

The clashes come as Syria’s interim president faces a major security challenge. Alawite activists have accused their community of facing violence since Assad fell, particularly in rural Homs and Latakia.

A curfew has been imposed in the affected cities of Homs, Latakia, and Tartous. The situation remains tense, with more than 25 others captured in Jableh and surrounding areas.
