Syria’s Ministry of Education has announced sweeping reforms to the national curriculum, sparking widespread debate among Syrians. The changes, led by newly appointed Minister Nazir Mohammad al-Qadri, aim to revise subjects like Religious Studies and History.
Key revisions include removing references to polytheistic religions, deleting texts on the Assad regime, and rewording passages on gods in history books. The English Language subject has also undergone significant changes, with entire sections deleted or rewritten.
The reforms have been met with criticism, with critics arguing that they reflect a shift towards an Islamist interpretation of Syria’s history. Social media users have called for protests against the new curriculum, while supporters argue that the changes aim to correct “incorrect information” previously adopted by the former Assad regime.
The controversy has reignited fears for the safety of Syria’s minority groups. However, de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa recently met with senior Christian leaders amid efforts to reassure minority rights are being guaranteed under the new administration.
