Syria’s new Prime Minister Ahmad al-Sharaa (also known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani) has promised that the Islamist-led alliance will guarantee the rights of all religious groups in the country. In a statement, al-Sharaa said officials involved in torturing detainees would not be pardoned, vowing to bring them to justice.
The new government aims to reassure members of Syria’s religious minorities that they will not be repressed after the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad. Assad’s rule was marked by human rights abuses and torture, with thousands of people detained and hundreds dying under poor conditions.
HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani has pledged justice for victims of Assad’s iron-fisted rule. He said officials involved in torturing detainees would not be pardoned and urged countries to hand over those fleeing so they can be brought to justice.
The new government is tasked with heading the multi-ethnic, multi-confessional country until March 1. Mohammad al-Bashir, the transitional head of government, has called for an inclusive process to chart a new course for Syria.
Despite challenges ahead, Syrians are starting to feel safe in Aleppo, Syria’s second city captured by the rebels. However, uncertainty remains over basic aspects of life, such as education and prices.
The war has killed over 500,000 people and forced half the population to flee their homes, with six million seeking refuge abroad. The international community is watching closely as Syria navigates its new course.
