Syria is exhausted by war, says de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa. In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Sharaa claimed his country poses no threat to its neighbours or the West. He called for sanctions on Syria to be lifted and for his group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), to be removed from the terrorist list.
Sharaa led HTS and other rebel groups in the recent offensive that toppled former President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. His comments come as international attention focuses on Syria’s fragile peace efforts.
