Syria’s Mass Grave Claims Spark International Concern

A Syrian advocacy group leader has revealed the existence of a mass grave containing at least 100,000 bodies killed by former President Bashar al-Assad’s government. Mouaz Moustafa, head of the Syrian Emergency Task Force, identified the site in Damascus and claimed it is one of five mass graves discovered over the years. The estimate suggests that victims included Syrians, US, British citizens, and other foreigners.

The discovery has sparked international concern as hundreds of thousands of Syrians are estimated to have been killed since 2011, when Assad’s government cracked down on protests against his rule, leading to a full-scale civil war. Human rights groups and governments accuse Assad of widespread extrajudicial killings, including mass executions within the country’s notorious prison system.

Assad has repeatedly denied these allegations, claiming his detractors are extremists. However, Moustafa expressed concern that gravesites were unsecured, highlighting the need for preservation to safeguard evidence for investigations.
