Syria’s new government has faced criticism for its plans to implement a revised curriculum in schools, which aims to replace existing content with “extremist” ideology. The changes include the removal of poetry about women and love, as well as references to gods and ancient history events that highlight non-Islamic cultures.
The proposed curriculum was met with strong opposition from activists, who warn that such education could shape individuals whose ideas threaten regional and international security. Critics argue that the new approach is not only biased but also fails to provide a balanced historical understanding of religions.
Syria’s interim government has downplayed the changes, claiming they are focused on creating an “inclusive society.” However, concerns persist over the country’s future direction under its new leadership, led by former al-Qaeda affiliate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The group, designated as a terrorist organization in several countries, is seeking to rebrand itself and engage with international partners.
