Syria’s New President Meets Saudi Crown Prince in Historic Visit

Syrian Arab Republic President Abu Mohammed al-Julani arrived in Saudi Arabia on Sunday for historic talks with Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. This is the first official trip abroad by Julani since he took power on December 8, following the collapse of the Assad regime.

The visit marks a significant shift in Julani’s approach to regional politics, as he seeks to balance between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, two countries with differing views on the region. Qatar has historically been closer to Iran and Turkey, while Saudi Arabia is more aligned with the UAE and Egypt.

Despite appearances of improved relations, tensions between Doha and Riyadh remain. SANA reported that Julani met with Foreign and Expatriates Minister Asaad al-Shaibani at King Khalid International Airport upon his arrival. The two leaders held a long meeting to discuss support for Syria’s future, unity, and economic cooperation.

SANA quoted Julani as saying they discussed “comprehensive plans” in various fields, including energy, technology, education, and health, with the aim of achieving real partnership and stability in the region. Al-Arbiya also documented the historic meetings, although details were limited.

Julani’s visit to Saudi Arabia highlights the country’s continued influence in the region as a key power. Born in Saudi Arabia, Julani later lived in Damascus before joining al-Qaeda and becoming the head of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
