Syria’s Ahmed al-Sharaa has set a timeline of four to five years for holding the country’s first presidential election since the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad. Sharaa, who was declared transitional president last week, said that establishing a new infrastructure and updating electoral data are crucial steps before any elections can be held.
In an interview with Syria TV, Sharaa emphasized the importance of consolidating data on the country’s population to ensure the accuracy of election results. He also stated that Syria would apply international norms on transitional periods, aiming to eventually transition to an elected presidency and authority.
Sharaa has pledged to embark on a political transition, including a national conference to produce an inclusive government. The conference will discuss key problems in Syria and produce a final statement that will form the basis of a constitutional declaration. A preparatory committee will be formed to hold consultations across the country, with representatives invited to participate.
The timeline for drafting a new constitution was previously set at up to three years, but Sharaa’s new estimate suggests a longer period. The transitional president’s efforts aim to pave the way for a more democratic and inclusive governance structure in Syria.
