A new action-comedy film adaptation of the 1980s police procedural series “T.J. Hooker” is in development at Netflix, with the streamer securing rights to the property. The show, created by Ryan Husky, originally aired from 1982 to 1986 and starred William Shatner as the titular character.
The Netflix adaptation aims to bring a more meta and comedic tone to the classic series. Producers Jarrad Paul and Andy Mogel are set to write the film, having previously collaborated on comedy projects such as “Yes Man” and “The D Train.” The duo has also co-showrunners on Netflix’s upcoming scripted series “Free Bert.”
William Shatner is reportedly in talks to be involved with the project, potentially playing a supporting role. The cast from the original series will not be returning, but the new film promises to bring a fresh take to the classic characters.
Netflix has secured producers Sophie Cassidy and Matt Crespy for 2.0 Entertainment, Adrian Askarieh for Prime Universe Films, and Alex Westmore for Vali Vista Films. Deadline was first to report on the adaptation, which will mark the second major IP acquired by Netflix in recent months following “Stranger Things” and a potential live-action remake of “Wednesday”.
