T.J. Watt, a key member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is not attending the team’s mandatory minicamp as he pursues a new contract. The defensive end has been quiet since the end of the 2024 season but seemingly expressed frustration with negotiations in April by posting an Instagram story showing him giving a peace sign in his Steelers jersey.
Watt’s current deal, signed in 2021, averaged $28 million per year, but Myles Garrett’s record-breaking contract, which averages $40 million annually, may be driving up Watt’s demands. If Watt misses all three days of minicamp, he would face nearly $105,000 in fines.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said the team is “certainly not surprised” by Watt’s absence and expressed optimism that a deal will get done. Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin added that Watt is handling his business and taking care of personal matters, including the arrival of a new baby.
The Steelers remain hopeful that Watt will sign a long-term contract, with general manager Omar Khan stating he was “very hopeful” that the defensive end would finish his career as a Steeler. Watt has 108 career sacks and is considered one of the top pass rushers in the NFL.
