T-Mobile Launches Cellular Starlink Service to Combat Dead Zones

T-Mobile has officially launched its cellular Starlink service, a satellite-based solution that provides smartphone users with internet access in areas with poor or no cell coverage. The service, which was available through a free beta program for nearly two years, now charges subscribers $10 per month.

The T-Satellite technology uses special Starlink satellites to beam data to smartphones, eliminating the need for additional accessories. Users can activate the service when they enter a T-Mobile dead zone and will receive SMS messages and location sharing capabilities. The system is expected to expand to support MMS messages and voice/video calls later this year.

The launch aims to address rural internet connectivity issues, which are common in areas with sparse cell coverage. According to T-Mobile, “No towers nearby? No problem. If you can see the sky, you’re connected.” The service will be available to users on rival networks as well, although non-T-Mobile customers may need to call or visit a retail location to access it.

T-Satellite is supported by over 60 phone models, including recent releases like the iPhone 13 and Samsung Galaxy S21. Users can check T-Mobile’s support page for a full list of compatible devices. The service will be particularly useful for people planning long hikes or camping trips, where internet connectivity may be limited.

While Apple’s satellite-based messaging is already available on some iPhones, it remains unclear if this feature will become a paid option. Other companies like AST SpaceMobile are also working to develop commercial satellite connectivity services, although they face challenges in launching more satellites before entering the market.

For now, T-Mobile’s cellular Starlink service offers a promising solution for rural internet connectivity issues. With its competitive pricing and expanding capabilities, it may attract users seeking reliable internet access in areas with limited coverage.
