US telecom firm T-Mobile has detected attempts by “bad actors” to infiltrate its systems, but fortunately, they did not access sensitive customer data. The company’s Chief Security Officer, Jeff Simon, revealed that the attacks were linked to a Chinese-linked cyberespionage operation called “Salt Typhoon,” which targets US telecommunications firms.
Simon stated that T-Mobile’s defenses successfully protected customer information and prevented any disruption of services. However, the hackers’ identity remains unclear. The company reported its findings to the US government for assessment and cut off the connection to the compromised network in question.
This incident is part of a broader cyber espionage campaign by Chinese-linked hackers, which has affected other major telecom firms such as AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen. Authorities are investigating this “broad and significant” operation, which has stolen customer call records and accessed sensitive information for government officials or politicians.
