A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan early Tuesday, leaving 27 people with minor injuries and scattered damage across the region. The quake hit at 12:17 a.m., centered 38 kilometers southeast of Chiayi County Hall at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Reports indicate minor to moderate damage around the cities of Chiayi and Tainan. Twenty-seven people were sent to hospitals for treatment, including six who were rescued from a collapsed house in Tainan with a one-month-old baby among them. A provincial highway bridge was also damaged.
No fatalities have been reported, but rescuers are still assessing the damage. Two people in Tainan and one person in Chiayi city were rescued without injury after being trapped in elevators.
A printing factory fire broke out in Chiayi due to the quake, but it was extinguished with no injuries reported. The island is prone to earthquakes due to its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a line of seismic faults surrounding the Pacific Ocean where most world earthquakes occur.
