Taiwan President Vows to Address Chip Industry Concerns with US

Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te has vowed to communicate more closely with the US and invest in the US chip industry, hours after former US President Donald Trump ordered reciprocal tariffs on trade partners. The move could threaten a global trade war.

Trump had accused Taiwan of taking away the US chip business and said he wanted it back. However, Taiwan’s TSMC is the world’s largest chipmaker and produces chips for major companies including Apple, Intel, and Nvidia.

Lai acknowledged Trump’s concerns but emphasized that Taiwan’s semiconductor industry is part of a global ecosystem where countries specialize in different areas. He stressed the need for calm communication with industries to create a “win-win” scenario.

The Taiwanese president proposed a new initiative to strengthen the semiconductor supply chain globally and work with partners like the US to build a more resilient and diversified system. Lai also assured that Taiwan would maintain open communication with the US to help them better understand Taiwan’s importance in rebuilding the US manufacturing industry.

Notably, over 40% of Taiwan’s overseas investments are now focused on the US, exceeding those invested in China.
