Taiwan’s top technology official, Wu Cheng-wen, has defended the island’s semiconductor industry dominance, saying there is no need for one country to control it. Wu made his comments after US President Donald Trump criticized Taiwan’s chip industry and claimed he wanted to restore US chip manufacturing.
According to Wu, Taiwan’s success in the sector was built over 50 years of investment and hard work. The official noted that each country has its own strengths when it comes to chips, with Japan excelling at chemicals and equipment, and the US being “second to none” in design and application.
Wu emphasized that the semiconductor industry is complex and requires specialization and division of labor. He argued that there is no need for a single nation to control all technologies globally. Instead, Taiwan is willing to serve as a base for friendly democratic countries to play their role in the semiconductor supply chain.
