Taiwan’s coast guard intercepted a cargo ship off its north coast on Friday afternoon, suspecting it may be involved in the cutting of an international undersea telecom cable earlier that day. The Cameroon-flagged vessel, Shunxin-39, was ordered to return closer to shore for investigation but rough weather prevented boarding, allowing the ship to continue to South Korea.
Taiwanese authorities believe the ship is registered in Cameroon but has ties to a Hong Kong company headed by Guo Wenjie, a Chinese national. The discovery comes as Taiwan investigates the alleged cable cut, which disrupted global internet connectivity.
