Taiwan President Lai Ching-te has called for talks with China, saying war has no winners, amid rising tensions between the two sides. China has rebuffed his offers and labeled him a “separatist.” However, Lai remains committed to peace, emphasizing that it is priceless and cannot be achieved through illusions or dreams.
The Taiwanese government will continue to strengthen its defenses, preparing for potential conflict as the best way to avoid war. Lai also announced plans to establish a sovereign wealth fund to boost the tech-focused economy.
China’s Taiwan Affairs Office has dismissed Lai’s speech as “two-faced” and accused him of failing to accept China’s sovereignty claims over the island. The office’s spokesperson said that Taiwan is part of China and that national reunification is inevitable.
Despite these tensions, talks with the US are continuing “smoothly,” according to Lai. He also highlighted the importance of exchanges and cooperation with China, but emphasized that they must be reciprocal in nature.
The establishment of a sovereign wealth fund is seen as a key move to boost Taiwan’s economy, which is heavily reliant on technology exports. The government has not provided further details on the plan.
Lai’s speech comes as tensions between Taiwan and China continue to rise. Military drills are a possibility for both sides on May 20, the anniversary of Lai taking office. However, Lai offered a message of peace, emphasizing that war has no winners and that dialogue is essential for resolving conflicts.
