Afghanistan cricketers Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi expressed dismay over the Taliban’s decision to ban women from studying nursing and midwifery courses, citing Islam’s emphasis on education for everyone. The Taliban has reportedly ordered a 10-day window for final exams before the rule takes effect, sparking concerns about women’s access to healthcare.
Rashid Khan wrote on X: “Education is vital in Islamic teachings, emphasizing knowledge pursuit for both men and women.” He highlighted the importance of female doctors and nurses, saying their absence impacts healthcare and dignity. Nabi added that the ban is unjust, betraying girls’ dreams and the nation’s future.
The Taliban’s latest move marks another restriction on women’s education since 2021. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) called for the decision to be reconsidered, saying it would harm healthcare and development. The European Union also condemned the ban, criticizing the Taliban for violating women’s rights and restricting access to education.
The ban follows a pattern of restrictions on women’s education under the Taliban’s strict interpretation of Islamic law since 2021. Afghanistan needs professionals in all fields, particularly medical sectors, where female doctors and nurses are scarce. The cricketers urged the Taliban to reconsider, saying education is not just a societal responsibility but a moral obligation rooted in faith and values.
