The Taliban has announced a new ban on the employment of women by international and domestic non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Afghanistan, threatening to shut down these groups if they fail to comply.
In a letter published on X Sunday night, the Economy Ministry warned that NGOs must immediately stop employing Afghan women, citing concerns over compliance with Islamic dress codes. The ministry stated that it would cancel the license of any institution that fails to cooperate, effectively shutting them down.
This move comes after the Taliban previously banned women from working in various jobs and accessing public spaces. They have also restricted education beyond sixth grade for girls.
The ban on female employment by NGOs marks another attempt by the Taliban to restrict women’s rights and freedoms in Afghanistan.
