The Taliban regime in Afghanistan continues its assault on women’s fundamental rights, with a new decision announced on December 28 aiming to strip residential buildings of windows overlooking public spaces. The move aims to deprive women of visibility and prevent them from engaging in public activities.
Since taking power in 2021, the Taliban has steadily eroded women’s education and job opportunities. In August, a law banned women from singing or reading aloud, while October’s decree prohibited reciting the Quran in the presence of other women. These measures are part of the regime’s broader campaign to erase women from public spaces.
Critics argue that this erosion of rights is not only unjust but also short-sighted. By subjecting half of its population to genuine gender-based apartheid, Afghanistan risks exacerbating instability and underdevelopment. The country’s fate hangs in the balance as it struggles to extricate itself from a state of stagnation.
The international community has been criticized for its handling of the situation, with some countries recognizing the Taliban regime while others have compromised on their values. However, the need for collective action against this human rights crisis cannot be ignored.
