Taliban Deputy Calls for End to Education Ban on Afghan Women and Girls

A senior Taliban figure has urged the group’s leader to scrap education bans on Afghan women and girls, calling it an “injustice” against 20 million people. Sher Abbas Stanikzai, political deputy at the Foreign Ministry, made the remarks in a speech, saying there is no excuse for denying education to women and girls. This marks his first public call for a change in policy and a direct appeal to Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada. The ban on female education has been in place since sixth grade, and authorities have also stopped medical training courses for women. Stanikzai’s comments echo those of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, who urged Muslim leaders to challenge the Taliban on women and girls’ education earlier this month.
